Students wishing to pursue an education in architecture, interior architecture, or landscape architecture in Kansas City can begin their studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. A cooperative agreement between KSU and UMKC enables students to enroll in a comprehensive two-year curriculum (one year for landscape architecture) that introduces them to the fundamentals of environmental design. Eligible students complete a sequence of courses comparable to those offered by Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. Students apply for admission to Kansas State and the College upon satisfactory completion of UMKC’s curriculum.
The UMKC architecture program is located in Katz Hall. UMKC student course work and overall experience are enriched by alliances with the Kansas City Center for Design Education and Research, the American Institute of Architects, the Kansas City Art Institute, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Approximately 36 students are selectively admitted to the first-year class at UMKC. Most students are from Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area. Scholarships are available for students interested in beginning their architectural studies at UMKC, and Bright Flight Scholarships are also accepted.
