The M IAPD degree program is structured in a 1+ 4 sequence comprising eleven terms: One year of Environmental Design Studies followed by four years (including one summer of study between the third and fourth or fourth and fifth years) within Interior Architecture & Product Design. Students are accepted into the College of Architecture, Planning & Design and begin their education by enrolling in the Environmental Design Program (ENVD). The ENVD Program provides a common first year for all of the professional programs in the College prior to moving on to their selected discipline. During the first year, students select one of the professional degree-granting programs in the College and apply to begin their professional studies. In addition to design-related coursework, throughout the five years, students are required to complete a series of approved K-State 8 general education program which help students widen their perspectives, explore relationships among subjects and build critical and analytical thinking skills. Total hours required for degree completion: 169 (138 undergraduate credit hours, and 31 graduate credit hours).
Related studies consist of courses in building technology, design and furniture history, professional practice, the selection of materials and finishes, and general education. A number of these courses are offered by other departments in the College and University and are taken with students enrolled in other disciplines. However, instruction in computer technology and software is provided within the department. These skills greatly enhance the student’s performance in design studio, and ultimately his or her effectiveness in the workplace.
