The next guest lecturer sponsored by the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University will be given by a principal of Kansas City architecture firm BNIM. Mark Shapiro will present Sustainable Architecture, an Approach on Wednesday, October 21, at 4:00 p.m. in the Pierce Commons of Seaton Hall. The lecture is open to the public without charge. The lecture will link the contemporary wave of sustainable design to the sometimes maligned legacy of the modern movement in architecture. Mark Shapiro possesses a wealth of experience earned through his professional and academic career. With over 27 years of experience in the profession, he has been recognized with many honors and awards for his work, has exhibited across the world and has been published extensively. He previously taught at Syracuse and Tulane Universities and was head of the Department of Architecture at Kansas State University. He also served as Director of the Kansas City Academic Program for Kansas State. Shapiro’s advice and expertise are sought by academic institutions and organizations. He is frequently invited to participate in design juries, has been a visiting critic and an invited lecturer both on the national and international scene. Throughout his career, he has participated in many design competitions, produced a variety of studies, solved urban planning issues and analyzed issues of historic contexts such as the National Endowment for the Arts funded “Six City Sites: New Buildings in Historic Districts” study in New Orleans. His competition entries have included the New Orleans Museum of Art, Felix Nussbaum Museum, Cardiff Bay and Oslo Opera Houses, the South African Constitutional Court, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Houston Hermann Park competitions. While with BNIM Architects, Shapiro has worked on many projects on both a local and national level, including the Institute for Molecular Medicine Research Laboratory at the University of Texas in Houston, the Kansas City Art Institute Master Plan, Mixed Use Development in Birmingham, Alabama, Cambrian College’s Center of Excellence, the Urban Redevelopment Plan for the city of North Charleston, South Carolina, Brad Pitt’s Make it Right Foundation, the Holy Cross Sustainable Redevelopment Plan and the Holy Cross School Site Master Plan in Post-Katrina New Orleans, as well as the Greensburg, Kansas Master Plan. He is currently working on the design a sustainable mixed use development of 2,500 dwelling units in Montreal and the Tall Grass Prairie Reserve Visitor Center. Shapiro earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cape Town School of Architecture and a master’s in city planning and urban design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. This lecture is an introductory event for the 2009 edition of the Bowman Forum for third-year architecture students.
