Projects by student participants in the spring and summer 2009 Study Abroad programs of Kansas State University and the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design will be on display from September 14-October 9 in the Chang Gallery and the first floor hallway of the east wing of Seaton Hall. The exhibition is open to the public without charge. Hours of the Chang Gallery are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays.

Students in the college’s degree-granting programs are given the option of participating in study abroad during and following their fourth year. During the spring and summer of 2009, 96 students in the college chose to study abroad. Of the student participants, 78 are now fifth-year students (61 percent of the fifth-year class). Eighteen students in their third or fourth year of study participated in summer programs.

According to Lynn Ewanow, associate dean and director of international programs for the College of Architecture, Planning and Design, participation in study abroad programs benefits students in all majors, but students of architecture, interior architecture and product design, landscape architecture, and regional and community planning are particularly well served through the experience of studying in unfamiliar environments as it heightens cultural and historical awareness; improves self-reliance; encourages better understanding of global economics, politics, and societies; and broadens professional horizons. She says, “The College of Architecture, Planning, and Design is committed to enhancing the study abroad experience for its students and supporting the emphasis on international education which is part of the K-State strategic plan.”

Professors Rick Forsyth and David Sachs taught in the program at Orvieto, and Professor Robert Condia taught in the program at Santa Chiara.
