MARK BANHOLZER has developed a record of professional achievement that was foreshadowed by the extraordinary quality of his undergraduate studies in the Department of Architecture. Nominated by the faculty for the Ranft Scholarship presented by the Saint Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Banholzer became the first student from Kansas State University selected for this prestigious recognition. Electing to take part in the Department's undergraduate internship, Banholzer was sponsored by Patty Berkebile Nelson Associates in Kansas City and became a member of the design teams for the renovation of the Federal Reserve Bank which was later selected for an AIA Design Award, and for the Norfolk, Virginia, Cultural Arts Center competition in which the firm won a Merit Award. At commencement one year later, the faculty awarded Banholzer the AIA Student Medal for design and academic excellence. A native of Florissant in suburban Saint Louis, Banholzer returned to the gateway city upon graduation to join the firm now known as Cannon Design. Recently named Senior Associate, Banholzer has been project designer for a diverse string of award-winning design projects. The DePaul Medical Office Building, St. Clement's Retirement Center, Oak Brook Elementary School, St. Charles County Community College and, most recently, the Newman Education Center for continuing medical education have each won chapter and/or regional design awards presented by the AIA. Several of these projects have been featured in Progressive Architecture and Architectural Record. Banholzer is now designing a 250,000 square foot physics building for the campus of the University of Florida and a student recreation center for North East Missouri State University. Banholzer is an active member of the Saint Louis Chapter AIA and has also served as a design juror at the Washington University School of Architecture.
