Regional and Community Planning 2005 Alumni Honoree [ Previous | Next ] |
RUSSELL EWY had a life-long interest in architecture, years of experience working for his father's construction company and a broad range of study while completing his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at K-State. Seeking to bring these elements together, Russ then pursued the Master of Regional and Community Planning (MRCP). Following graduation, Russ entered the planning field as a transportation planner for the Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Department (MAPD). After a year in that position, Russ was promoted to senior planner within the current plans division of the MAPD where he was primarily involved with zoning matters. This position enabled him to work closely with the development community and other government officials, better utilizing much of what he learned in the MRCP program. From this interaction, Russ was able to transition from the public sector to the private sector, gaining a position in 1998 with Baughman Company P.A., a well-established local development firm specializing in planning, zoning, land planning, landscape architecture, engineering and surveying. As a planning consultant with Baughman Company, Russ has been fortunate to be involved with a wide variety of planning and land development projects. His primary function is to utilize his previous work experience at the MAPD by helping local and national developers through often onerous permitting processes. In this facet of his career, he helps coordinate the various professionals in the office and local officials to get projects designed, approved and constructed. In addition to these services, he also works with Kansas cities and counties on a host of activities. Russ is responsible for the research and preparation of materials related to the company's community planning projects, which include detailed land use analysis studies, transportation and community facility improvement plans, drainage and flood hazard plans, capital improvement planning and land development regulations. Most recently, he finished writing an annexation plan for the City of Topeka and is currently assisting Ellis County with the creation of zoning and subdivision regulations. Away from work, Russ enjoys spending time with his nine year old daughter. Professionally, Russ maintains active membership in American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, as well as the American Planning Association's Small Town and Rural Planning Division. |
