CRAIG SCHULTZ is a partner at Laidlaw Schultz Architects located in Newport Beach, California. Originally from Overland Park, Schultz, a fifth-generation Kansan, graduated magna cum laude with the Bachelor of Architecture. While at KSU, his tri-fold interest in the functional, theoretical, and pragmatic sides of architecture drove him to pursue internships in several outstanding Kansas City firms, excel in his academic studies, and serve as editor of OZ, Volume 9. While serving as editor of OZ, the award-winning, student produced journal of the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design, he was able to bring together a majority of the leaders of the burgeoning deconstruction movement prior to their rise into the national spotlight. It was this drive to excel and understand all aspects of the discipline of architecture which prepared him for his current practice. Upon graduation, Schultz sought his first job working for Building Design Partnership in London, the largest architectural firm in Europe. While there, he worked on some of the leading projects of the late 1980's, including the Chunnel Crossing and London Docklands redevelopment. Upon returning to the United States, Schultz relocated to the Los Angeles area, the hub of avant garde architecture at that time, and ultimately obtained a position with Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones after working for Sherman and Ball Architects and Eric Owen Moss. Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones proved to be fruitful ground and afforded him the opportunity of working on several nationally recognized projects including the Paramount Film and Tape Archives and UCLA Cogeneration Facility. This period of time also helped to clarify some of the early ideals first pursued in his undergraduate studies and ultimately led him to graduate school at Yale University from which he received the Master of Architecture in 1994. Upon completion of his studies, Schultz returned to the Los Angeles area, joining Laidlaw Architects, an offshoot of Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones. In 1997, he was made a partner to the newly renamed Laidlaw Schultz Architects. The firm's primary emphasis is upon use specific buildings, bringing a level of design to buildings ordinarily ignored. Schultz is a registered architect in the state of California and has been involved with work published in Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, A+U, DBZ and several competition catalogs. |
