Alumni Awards List

Kansas State University has selected James "Jim" Pendowski as the 2010 Alumni Fellow of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. Pendowski will visit the campus on February 24-26, 2010, to meet with members of the academic community in a variety of settings.

Jim Pendowski manages one of the nation's most innovative pollution cleanup and control programs. At the Washington State Department of Ecology, Pendowski leads creative efforts to clean up thousands of contaminated sites across Washington. These include projects to restore and protect properties in and around Puget Sound, one of America's most important waterways and its second-largest estuary.

He has forged a career in environmental stewardship, establishing himself as a leader during over 12 years of environmental work in Illinois. In 1991, Pendowski joined the Washington State Department of Ecology's Solid Waste Program. In 1998, he became manager of the Toxics Cleanup Program.

In his current role, he is responsible for cleanup actions under the Model Toxics Control Act (state Superfund law). His leadership helps put people to work to clean up sites that can be used for economic development, recreation and other beneficial uses.

Pendowski received the master of regional and community planning degree in 1981.

The Alumni Fellow program is celebrated annually by all Kansas State University academic colleges and is coordinated by the Kansas State University Alumni Association.
