Dennis Day
2002 Undergraduate Outstanding Teaching Award

Upon recommendation of students and faculty in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design, Kansas State University is privileged to acknowledge the outstanding record in undergraduate teaching of Professor Dennis J. Day.

For over 37 years, Professor Day has been a leading educator in the profession of landscape architecture, particularly in the subject area of landscape architecture construction. He has an unequaled command of that subject and an unfailing sense of purpose, insight and integrity. Nearly every student who has had the privilege of having Professor Day in the classroom and studio would not be where they are today in terms of professional and personal growth without Professor Day's enlightening courses, as well as his mentorship, insight and friendship.

Professor Day's teaching philosophy is simple but very effective. He believes that students in a professional education setting typically learn from their errors significantly faster and with more lasting effect than from their successes. Further, he believes that a real world experience is an important component in professional education.

The effectiveness of Professor Day's teaching philosophy, methodology and subject knowledge is validated by the respect his former students command throughout the country. But even more important are the successful careers, significant achievements and personal contributions that his former students have forged. A key to Professor Day=s success over the years is his conviction that a college education is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. He communicates this message to his students the very first day they walk into his classroom. As a result of having Professor Day as a teacher and mentor, his students believe that they have had the best education possible--one that potential employers actively seek out and one that peers educated elsewhere can only wish for.

Professor Day has, throughout his career, dedicated himself to the education of the profession, not only by his teaching but also through his involvement as a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects' Council on Education and as a member of the Roster of Visiting Evaluators for accreditation of landscape architecture educational programs.

Of all the influence he has over students under his instruction, most important is the sense of principle, integrity and ethic that Professor Day takes the time and effort to instill in them and that continues to serve the students well, long after their careers at K-State have come to an end--essentially for their lifetimes.

Kansas State University and the profession of landscape architecture are most fortunate to have Professor Dennis J. Day as an exemplary and esteemed representative of the University and the profession.
