
The Department
of Interior Architecture & Product Design (IAPD) in the College
of Architecture, Planning and Design (APDesign) of Kansas State
University seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at
the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. The position will commence
on August 15, 2012; salary for this nine-month position is
competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Kansas State
University is a Land Grant institution and candidates should be
committed to a tripartite mission of teaching, creative and/or
scholarly research, and service.
The interdisciplinary and active learning environment of IAPD provides students with an extraordinary education interweaving interior architecture, product design, and furniture design into a strong program of study where innovation and the art of ‘making’ intersect, and where evidence-based design plays an increasingly important role in the education of students. We are searching for a colleague who values collaboration, inspiration, and making; who is able to contribute at multiple levels of the curriculum; who embodies design excellence and enthusiasm for innovative design. The successful candidate will teach in advanced and/or graduate level interior architecture design studios as well as support courses that contribute to learning in two of the three areas of Interior Architecture, Product (Industrial) Design, or Furniture Design. The main emphasis of this position is Interior Architecture.
An additional teaching focus may include such areas as digital media; design theory; hand media including diagramming, ideation, sketching, representation; programming; design history; interior construction systems and documentation; or another area of emphasis of the candidate. Successful candidates will be comfortable engaging the students in both hand graphic techniques as well as digital media during design processes.
Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate and graduate level studio, lecture, and seminar courses.
Mentor graduate level students.
Participate in thesis committees.
Engage in research and/or creative scholarship.
Engage the broader community, state, and profession in service.
Collegial participation in departmental and college governance.
Participate in innovative teaching and curriculum development.
In order to be eligible, candidates must:
Have at least a Master’s degree in interior architecture, interior design, architecture, industrial design, product design, or a related field;
Qualify
for future membership on the KSU Graduate Faculty

Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years of demonstrable professional design experience. To apply at the rank of Associate Professor, a minimum of 6 years of teaching design at the university level as well as an established record of scholarship is expected.

The department offers a five-year Master of Interior Architecture and Product Design program (MIAPD) as the first-professional degree. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) since 1974 and also accredited by NASAD (the National Association for Schools of Art and Design), the IAPD program is built upon a 42-year tradition of providing students with a nationally recognized and innovative education. The interior architecture and product design program was chosen by professionals surveyed by DesignIntelligence for “America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools 2012” as the seventh best graduate program in the nation in the Interior Design rankings, and it is one of only three ranked graduate programs that is Council for Interior Design Accreditation accredited. Interior architecture and product design is also the highest ranked graduate program in the Midwest. The program has been ranked in the top 8 in 12 of 13 years, either on the graduate list or the undergraduate list, prior to the establishment of the five-year non-baccalaureate master’s program in 2006.
